Xiaomi Redmi Note : First impressions

Following up Xiaomi’s successful value for money phones Mi3 and Redmi 1S, they have launched Redmi Note exclusively on Flipkart like earlier phones, a phone with bigger screen size, or rather a Phablet and its priced at an attractive price of Rs 8,999. We got a review device here at Tech Focus and are sharing our first impressions.

Redmi Note looks big due to its 5.5” screen. From the looks of it, it seems like an IPS LCD Display which looks bright enough indoors as of now. You have the volume rocker and the power/lock-screen button on the right side towards the top. 3.5 mm jack for audio sits on the top-left side of the phone. In the bottom part, you can see the micro-USB slot that can be used for charging & connecting pen drives via USB. You have the front camera on the top-left part of the front panel, beside the proximity sensor and phone speaker.

The back side of the phone carries the main camera on the top part, below it you can find the LED flash. You can find the speaker grill towards the bottom left, beside where you can find Xiaomi’s logo. The device feels bit bulky and heavy to hold, also bit slippery due to the glossy finish of the backside. You can hold the device properly in one hand, provided you have a big hand! Tough luck if your hand isn’t big enough to hold in one hand.

The Interface is the same MIUI, which has been used in earlier Xiaomi’s phones and is Xiaomi’s customization of Android UI. It is pretty simple and straight forward, although they look lot similar to iOS icons and design. Redmi Note comes with Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) on-board, though you can expect an upgrade to either KitKat or Lollipop.

The specifications are as follows:

  • MediaTek MT6592 Octa-core 1.7GHz CPU with ARM Mali-450 GPU
  • 5 inch IPS LCD screen with 1280 X 720 Resolution
  • 2GB RAM, 8GB Flash Storage, micro SD extension up to 32GB
  • 13 MP Camera, 5 MP front camera, LED Flash
  • Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • One 2G & One 3G Dual SIM
  • 3100 mAh Battery
